A Most Wanted Man is a very well done film that showcases the acting talent of all involved. The story itself is slightly confusing but the end result is a very satisfying film. I found a lot of moments comparable to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy because the moments of the film were very subtle. Unlike TTSS, A Most Wanted Man never really makes you question anyone’s intentions (except for Hoffman’s character) and it makes it at least for “easier” viewing.
The acting by the whole cast was done well. Rachel McAdams did a good job in her role, but of course, the man at the center, Philip Seymour Hoffman showed why he was as good as he was. While this role wasn’t great so much in line delivery, Hoffman made sure his actions on screen (holding a glass, cigarette, etc) spoke loudly. The gestures, and posturing that Hoffman did throughout the movie really spoke louder than the words he was speaking (with a very good accent, I must say). Hoffman never overplayed his character and really blended in with the rest of the cast.
The direction was done well. Nothing is ever tense in the movie, but the great partnership of actor and director worked wonders, creating certain moments that made the movie special.
Final Thoughts: Good movie. It is not for everyone but the film is one to be celebrated in more ways than one. One of Hoffman’s best performances of the last few years.
